Where the universe began and where it finds its end. Kashi — the City of Light — is Shiva's own dwelling, the oldest living city on Earth, where every stone is a Linga and every ghat a gateway to moksha. The first and supreme among the twelve Jyotirlingas.
Kashi Vishwanath — the Lord of Kashi, the Lord of the Universe — is enshrined in Varanasi (Kashi, Benares), Uttar Pradesh, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. The Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is traditionally listed first among the twelve — the supreme expression of Shiva's infinite light, where the divine is most directly accessible to human devotion.
Kashi is not merely a city — it is Lord Shiva's own body. He holds it on the tip of his trident (trishul), so that even at the time of cosmic dissolution (pralaya), Kashi is untouched by destruction. Every stone here is a Shiva Linga, every ghat a tirtha, and every death in Kashi is believed to grant moksha — for Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the dying person's ear. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, inaugurated in 2021, has united the ancient temple with the sacred Ganga ghats in a magnificent complex spanning 5.27 lakh square feet.
Kashi Vishwanath is traditionally listed first and foremost among the twelve Jyotirlingas — the supreme self-manifested pillar of divine light. The Shiva Purana declares that darshan here bestows the merit of visiting all twelve simultaneously.
Death in Kashi is liberation — this is the most extraordinary promise of any city on earth. Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ear of the dying, ensuring their liberation regardless of karma. This makes every soul who dies in Kashi a recipient of divine grace.
Sacred texts declare that Kashi rests on the tip of Lord Shiva's trident. At the time of cosmic dissolution, while all of creation is destroyed, Kashi alone remains intact — held aloft by the Lord himself. It is the indestructible city, older than time.
Adi Shankaracharya — who revived Sanatana Dharma — was initiated into sannyasa at Kashi and composed the Ananda Lahari here. Kashi gave the world its greatest philosopher-saint. Every sage, siddha, and saint has passed through Kashi in their spiritual journey.
The magnificent Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, inaugurated in December 2021, transformed the ancient temple precinct. The corridor, spanning 5.27 lakh sq ft, directly connects the temple to the Manikarnika and Lalita ghats — uniting 5,000 years of sacred history in one breathtaking complex.
The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is among the most celebrated spiritual spectacles on earth — performed every evening by priests bearing towering lamps, conch shells, and sacred fire, as hundreds of boats filled with devotees witness the river herself being worshipped.
Varanasi's 84 ghats stretch for 7 km along the Ganga's western bank — each a sacred universe of its own, each a point of encounter between the mortal and the divine.
The ghats of Varanasi are unlike any place on earth. At dawn, thousands of pilgrims descend the ancient stone steps to bathe in the Ganga as the sun rises over the river — a sight that has remained unchanged for fifty centuries. Priests perform puja on small platforms, sadhus meditate under parasols, and boats drift past carrying flowers and the light of butter lamps.
Bathing in the Ganga at Varanasi before Kashi Vishwanath darshan is considered the most essential act of the pilgrimage — for the Ganga here is not merely a river but the manifestation of Shiva's own grace made liquid and sent to the earth.
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor now directly connects the ancient temple to the Manikarnika and Lalita ghats — pilgrims can walk from the Ganga's edge directly into the temple precinct, as it was in ancient times before centuries of construction had separated them.
The Ganga at Varanasi bends northward — a rare occurrence in the river's southward flow. This northward bend is considered sacred because it mirrors a spiritual U-turn (nivritti) — the soul turning back from the world toward the divine. This bend is called Varanasi's tirtha-kshetra and is one reason why the city is considered especially charged with divine energy.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021 — the corridor reunited the ancient Jyotirlinga with the sacred Ganga after centuries of separation, in a magnificent new sacred complex.
The new corridor covers 5,27,730 square feet — more than four times the size of the old temple precinct. It houses 24 temple buildings, including the main Kashi Vishwanath shrine and temples of the four Vedas, the nine planets, and the 12 Jyotirlingas.
For the first time in centuries, pilgrims can now see the sacred Ganga from within the temple precinct — and the Kashi Vishwanath temple's golden spire is visible from the river. The corridor restored the ancient visual and spiritual axis of Kashi.
Over 40 ancient temples and heritage structures — some dating to the 17th and 18th centuries — were carefully uncovered and restored during corridor construction. Each building is now accessible along the sacred walkway.
The corridor directly connects the temple to Manikarnika Ghat and Lalita Ghat — enabling pilgrims to bathe in the Ganga and walk directly to the Jyotirlinga's sanctum in one seamless sacred journey, as ancient texts described.
The complex includes shrines of Adi Vishweshwar, Ganesha, Nandi, the Navgrah, and galleries celebrating Kashi's 5,000-year history. The Mandap and cultural spaces enable continuous kirtans, discourses, and spiritual events.
World-class pilgrim amenities — cloak rooms, prasad counters, medical assistance, wheelchairs, digital seva booking, and multilingual guides — make the Kashi Vishwanath experience accessible to all devotees regardless of age or ability.
