The eighth among the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas — the ancient abode of Lord Nagnath, the Serpent Lord, enshrined within a magnificent Hemadpanthi stone temple of rare architectural grandeur in the Marathwada heartland.
Aundha Nagnath, located in Aundha village of Hingoli district, Maharashtra, is revered as the eighth of the twelve Jyotirlingas — sacred self-manifested forms of Lord Shiva scattered across the Indian subcontinent. The presiding deity, Lord Nagnath (Nāganātha), is the cosmic Lord adorned with serpents, a form of Shiva as the master of Nagas.
The Shiva Purana narrates that the sage Dadhichi performed intense tapas here, and Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a luminous Jyotirlinga. The site was also associated with the demon Daruka, whose destruction by Shiva gave this form its serpentine significance. The temple's antiquity is immense — some traditions date its origins to the age of the Pandavas.
Aundha Nagnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred Shiva shrines — where Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light. Darshan here dissolves accumulated karma and grants liberation.
Nagnath — the Serpent Lord — embodies Shiva's dominion over the Naga realm. The divine serpents Vasuki, Takshaka, and Ananta serve as ornaments of the Lord, symbolizing mastery over time, death, and primal forces.
The Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, and several Agamic texts describe the glory of Nagnath. Pilgrimage here is equivalent to performing the Ashvamedha Yagna, granting boundless merit to devotees.
The temple is a masterpiece of Hemadpanthi architecture — a medieval Maharashtrian style using interlocking stone without mortar. Its towering shikhara, intricate carvings, and stone-lattice windows are of national heritage importance.
Tradition holds that the Pandavas worshipped Lord Nagnath during their years of forest exile. The site thus carries the spiritual weight of Mahabharata-era devotion, making it one of the most ancient pilgrimage points of Maharashtra.
The sage Dadhichi, revered for sacrificing his bones to forge Indra's thunderbolt against Vritra, performed his legendary tapas at this very site. The ground here is charged with the energy of supreme self-sacrifice and devotion.
One of Maharashtra's finest specimens of medieval temple architecture — every stone tells a story of devotion and mastery.
